This document, the ‘Community Guidelines’ was last updated on 12.01.2025.

1. Introduction

1.1 The following Community Guidelines apply to your use of this Beyond Surviving website (the “Website“) available at www.beyondsurviving.ie and any Services and resources, including Services offered by Beyond Surviving and any Services and resources offered by any third-party services or event providers (“Linked Sites1”) which have been made available on the Website (“Services“).

1.2 For the purpose of this document, “use“ includes visiting the Website, browsing and engaging with any Content which has been made available on the Website or through our newsletter distributions, social media platforms, email distributions, volunteer, recruitment & engagement processes, or any other communication channels we use, uploading Content and other user-generated content (UGC) and registering to use and engaging with any Services. For the avoidance of doubt, “Content” refers to the information, material, submissions, comments, content and functionalities which are made available on the Website for “use”.

1.3 Please refer to Section 10 of this document before proceeding with reading the contents of this ‘Community Guidelines’ as Section 8 explains the abbreviated terms mentioned throughout this document and on our Website.

2. Purpose and intention of Beyond Surviving

2.1 This document has been issued by Beyond Surviving Charity Limited by Guarantee (alternatively “Beyond Surviving“ / “Beyond Surviving™” / “Beyond Surviving CLG“ / “we“ / “our“ / “us“) (Registered Charity Number 20206738) of Castlebar, Co. Mayo, Republic of Ireland.

These Community Guidelines set out:

  • What and for whom Beyond Surviving’s Website, Services and Content are intended for;
  • What Beyond Surviving’s Website, Services and Content are not for;
  • What we expect from those who engage with, use and share our Website, Content and Services; and
  • Information regarding any violations of these Community Guidelines.

Essentially, this document outlines the rules for all those who engage with, use and share our Website, Content and Services.

3. What Beyond Surviving’s Website is for

3.1 The main object for which Beyond Surviving is established is to “support, empower, and connect survivors of domestic, sexual, and gender-based violence (DSGBV) in Ireland by providing comprehensive, holistic support that promotes wellbeing and facilitates healing through a multifaceted approach”.

3.2 Our mission is “to foster a community of thriving survivors of domestic, sexual and gender-based violence and abuse, and to support them in nurturing their healing journey.”

3.3 We advance our ‘main object’ and purpose through the use and availability of our Website, social media platforms, Content, newsletter distributions, partnerships, collaborations, events, workshops and all other Services and communication channels we use and make available.

3.4 Beyond Surviving supports all survivors and victims of domestic, sexual and gender-based violence and abuse (DSGBVA) and their supporters by hosting safe spaces both on our Website, social media and communication platforms, offline and through our Services, where they can explore and nurture their healing, wellbeing and personal growth together, find support, connect with one another, empower each other and ultimately thrive on their healing journey.

3.5 Beyond Surviving encourages victims and survivors of DSGBVA and their supporters to speak openly about the healing and recovery journey and their experiences, learnings, discoveries, knowledge and insights gained along the way, both about themselves and the healing journey itself (for example users can share with fellow survivors how they find meditation beneficial/ Perhaps they’ve discovered Hatha yoga or other trauma-informed, mind-body therapies and maybe have a favourite instructor to recommend?/ Perhaps they’ve discovered that they’re stronger than they give themselves credit for/ Maybe a book has changed their outlook on life or even opened up a new perspective?/ Perhaps victim-survivors would like to share their challenges or celebrations on the healing journey/ Perhaps they’re new to healing and wish to explore what fellow survivors find helpful for their healing and wellbeing). These examples are non-exhaustive and are simply to provide guidance on what can and could be published on our Website.

3.6 We believe in the healing power of community. Beyond Surviving is dedicated to connecting fellow survivors and victims of DSGBVA and their supporters with one another both through our Website and in-person in the context of, but not limited to, event gatherings, focus groups, advocacy groups, survivor-led initiatives, workshops, resources, educational sessions, online, fundraising activities, group coaching, group body-centred therapies like somatics, social activities, discussion groups and other Services (this list is non-exhausive and is simply to provide guidance on what Beyond Surviving does)

3.7 All those who engage with, use and share our Website, Content, social media platforms and all Services are expected to behave appropriately and to treat everyone with respect, inclusivity, empathy, acceptance, fairness and kindness.

4. What Beyond Surviving’s Website is not for

4.1 Sharing Your Story and Experience of Abuse and Violence ‘in Detail’: Your story and experience of violence and abuse is important to us and we know how empowering, important, validating and courageous it is to voice this and share it with others. That is why we’ve listed here, and on our Website, the external Linked Site, ‘We-Speak’, a platform precisely for that purpose, and provided by the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre (DRCC). You can visit We-Speak and share your story of sexual violence at: www.wespeak.ie

About We-Speak:

We-Speak is a secure, anonymous online platform that aims to empower survivors of sexual violence to safely tell their own stories, in their own time, in their own words. The purpose of We-Speak is to provide a platform for these stories, in all of their diversity, so people can reclaim their voice. This space is an opportunity to anonymously write in your own words. It is for anyone who identifies as a victim, a survivor, a person who has experienced sexual violence of any kind, or for someone who is supporting another.” (About We-Speak)

We have also provided users of our Website and Services with a list of further resources which can be found in the ‘Find a resource’ section of our ‘The Survivor’s Hub’ on our Website.

Beyond Surviving’s website is intended as a safe space for survivors and victims of DSGBVA, as well as their supporters, to explore, nurture, and openly discuss their healing journey, wellbeing, and personal growth, along with the experiences, learnings, discoveries, knowledge and insights, gained about themselves, their wellbeing and their recovery journey. (for more information, please refer back to point 3.4 and 3.5 of this document).

The ‘Share your Journey’ functionality on our Website and commenting on other user’s submission(s) is intended for this precise purpose above. While we recognise that such healing journeys are naturally related to personal stories, incidents and experiences of abuse and violence, Beyond Surviving does not publish any user-generated content (UGC) on the Website or on any other communication channel we may use, which goes ‘into detail of abuse and violence’.

For the purpose of clarification and the avoidance of doubt, ‘into detail of abuse and violence’ is any material or UGC submitted through the Website which contains any further details of abuse and violence that goes beyond1:

  1. Sharing the form/ type of abuse or violence experienced (E.g. what we will publish is, for example: “I’m a survivor/ victim of…rape, sexual assault, coercive control, financial abuse, physical abuse, deception”, etc.).
  2. Sharing when the abuse or violence occurred in general terms (E.g. what we will publish is, for example: “…last year, 40 years ago”, “it happened when I was 19”, etc.).
  3. Sharing whether or not authorities, An Garda Síochana (Irish police), other support services or the justice system have been involved/ engaged (E.g. what we will publish is, for example: “I reported it to Gardaí”, “I attend the Rape Crisis Centre regularly”, “The perpetrator was acquitted of all charges”, “I found the justice process very retraumatising”, etc.).

Please note, it may be the case that even if UGC is redacted, it could still pose a risk of identification, for example, using the examples listed above in 1-3, “last year“, “it happened when I was 19” and “the perpetrator was acquitted of all charges” all published together jointly in one UGC, could still in fact identify a person.

Decisions to publish or not publish submission(s) to the Website is at the sole discretion of Beyond Surviving administrators and in accordance with our ‘Review Guidelines’ and in the best interests of the community we endeavor to create and safely provide. For further details as to how we make decisions about what is and what is not published on the Website, you can request to view a copy of our ‘Review Guidelines’ by contacting us at: info@beyondsurviving.ie

4.2 Harm to Minors: While domestic, sexual and gender-based violence and abuse (DSGBVA) occurs across the lifespan and does not discriminate, for legal reasons, Beyond Surviving is only to be used by individuals at least 18 years of age. Beyond Surviving cannot accept UGC from those aged under 18 years of age, or any UGC relating to Child Sexual Abuse. If you are under 18 years of age and submit UGC, or if your UGC relates to Child Sexual Abuse, we will be unable to publish it. If UGC contains identifiable information about yourself or another person and contains child protection or welfare concerns, then we have a duty to report any such concerns to appropriate authorities (such as Tulsa), as per the ‘Children First National Guidance for the Protection and Welfare of Children 2017’ (National Guidance for the Protection and Welfare of Children) and/ or An Garda Síochana (the Irish police). By submitting UGC on our Website, you confirm to us that you are at least 18 years of age.

4.3 User-Generated Content That is Not Related to Healing from Domestic, Sexual and Gender-based Violence and Abuse: The purpose of Beyond Surviving is to connect, advocate for, support and empower all survivors and victims of DSGBVA and their supporters. UGC that is explicitly not related to healing, wellbeing and recovering from DSGBVA or surviving domestic, sexual and gender-based violence, abuse and any related trauma in any way should be posted elsewhere. Please refer back to point 4.1 of this document should you specifically wish to share your story of sexual violence. Beyond Surviving does not publish such stories and submissions on our Website. Please refer back to point 3.4 and 3.5 of this document for more information on what we do publish on our Website.

4.4 Hate Speech: We do not tolerate user-generated content that actively blames victim-survivors or encourages violence or hatred. Do not make UGC for the purpose of inciting the hatred or dehumanisation of individuals or groups based on race, ethnic or national origin, religion, gender, gender identity, age, sexual orientation, disability or disease.

4.5 Promotion or Glorification of Self-Harm: While self-harm most certainly can co-occur with an experience of any form of domestic, sexual and gender based violence and abuse, do not make user-generated content that actively promotes or glorifies self-harm. This includes anything that urges or encourages others to: cut or injure themselves; embrace anorexia, bulimia, or other eating disorders; or attempt suicide. Speaking about these behaviours is incredibly important and online communities can be extraordinarily helpful to people struggling. If you do mention self-harm in your UGC (without going “into detail”), a trigger warning will be used to protect the safety of all others engaging with and using our Website. It is Beyond Surviving’s responsibility to attach such trigger warnings to UGC prior to publishing them to our Website.

4.6 Artwork: In the case that a user submits a photograph, realistic artwork, or other image(s) depicting an easily identifiable person, we redact identifiable features (e.g. add a redaction blur to the face area). Even if the person’s face is not visible, it may still be necessary to redact other features or clothing of the person if they are particularly identifiable (e.g. unique costumes, name tags, etc.). For further details on our review processes, you can request to view a copy of our ‘Review Guidelines’ by contacting us at: info@beyondsurviving.ie

4.7 Adult Content: When submitting UGC, including artwork, illustrations, and images, be sure you are respecting the healing community we are trying to create by not featuring adult content in these images. Do not upload images that show real-life human genitals or depict sex acts. Beyond Surviving reserves the right to make publishing decisions on all media submitted to the Website. For further details on our review processes, you can request to view a copy of our ‘Review Guidelines’ by contacting us at: info@beyondsurviving.ie

4.8 Harassment: Do not engage in targeted abuse, bullying, or harassment. Do not engage in the unwanted sexualisation, sexual harassment or abuse of others. We have a zero-tolerance policy for this.

4.9 Those Seeking Redemption for Crimes or Those Who Support Perpetrators of Domestic, Sexual and Gender-Based Violence and Abuse:

Beyond Surviving does not endorse or publish any UGC that seeks redemption for crimes committed or any form of domestic, sexual and gender-based violence and abuse perpetrated. Beyond Surviving is specifically for survivors and victims of DSGBVA and their supporters. We do not support or help those who have perpetrated such crimes or those who support such crimes, abuse and violence in any way. Those seeking redemption or those in support of such crimes, abuse, violence or perpetrators should seek support and help elsewhere.

4.10 Violent Content and Threats, Gore and Mutilation: We do not condone threats or mutilation. Do not make user-generated content which include violent threats toward individuals or groups. This includes threats of theft, property damage, or financial harm. Do not submit, post or comment violent Content just to be shocking. Do not showcase the mutilation or torture of human beings, animals (including bestiality), or their remains. Do not submit UGC that encourages or incites violence, or glorifies acts of violence or their perpetrators.

4.11 Anonymity: Any personal data and information which you provide and is collected and processed by Beyond Surviving in connection with your use of the Website and Services will be processed securely and in accordance with our ‘Privacy Policy’.

Users of the Beyond Surviving Website may also be active on social media and while it is very easy to publicise your own opinions and views on social media, please do not link your UCG or other’s UGC on our Website to your social media platforms and attempt to attribute such UCG to either you or somebody else. Think before you post, as you may be affecting somebody else’s reputation. This could in turn have a negative impact on your own life, the life of another and on Beyond Surviving. We trust that you will bear this in mind now and in the future, both on Beyond Surviving and beyond. Beyond Surviving reserves the right to remove UGC from the Website, should we become aware that they are in breach of defamation law, or any of our other policies and guidelines.
